Humana Impacts La Quinta, Calif. Community through Well-Being Initiatives in Advance of Humana Challenge
Events focused on well-being and philanthropy set the stage for tournament week
Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM), one of the nation’s leading health care companies, will lead numerous community well-being initiatives in La Quinta, Calif. surrounding the inaugural Humana Challenge golf tournament. The Humana Challenge PGA TOUR event, in partnership with the William J. Clinton Foundation, will feature lifelong well-being as its theme, challenging players, spectators and the general public to improve their health by making positive changes in diet, exercise and lifestyle.
During the week leading up to the tournament, activities will include a multi-generational playground build in Thermal at the San Felipe Oasis, a five mile Humana Well-Being Walk along Bear Creek Trail, a Humana Healthy Fun Fair, and a sponsored Humana Day at Certified Farmers’ Market in Old Town La Quinta.
“Humana is excited about hosting local well-being events that align with our belief in making fun things healthy and healthy things fun,” said Mike McCallister, Humana’s chairman and CEO. “We’re very grateful to the La Quinta community for working closely with us on the tournament, and we’re committed to giving back through these philanthropic efforts and well-being initiatives.”

Multi-generational playground build
Desert Alliance for Community Empowerment (DACE), Humana Inc., KaBOOM! (a national non-profit organization that has built more than 2,000 playgrounds) and volunteers will join forces to build a one-of-a-kind, multi-generational playground in Thermal at the San Felipe Oasis. The multi-generational playground, funded primarily by Humana, was created with personal drawings and input from local community members – from children to seniors – and will be built in six hours, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The unique space will have senior-focused and adult elements, including fitness stations and walking paths to promote good posture, balance and flexibility, as well as more traditional, kid-friendly equipment to build a truly multi-generational space. The project will also support a shade structure for use in the summer and family reunion gathering area to inspire get-togethers at the park for years to come. Through this philanthropic effort, Humana will seek to have a long-lasting impact on the community of La Quinta for many years to come.
Humana Well-Being Walk
Humana will sponsor a five mile, roundtrip Well-Being Walk along Bear Creek Trail in La Quinta. The trek will provide an opportunity for members of the community to come together and walk, which is one of the simplest ways to keep physically active. During the event, participants in the walk will be encouraged to register for a Humana pedometer to track their steps. In addition, at several designated stops, participants will be able to rest, rehydrate and eat a healthy snack, which will also include one of several Humana-sponsored prizes to encourage participants to complete the journey.

In addition, the fair will feature a Kids Fun Zone with multiple inflatables, a rock climbing wall, game booths and lawn games. There will also be a fitness center, healthy food vendors and informational booths for hospitals, local health professionals, health food stores and community partners. The La Quinta Community Fitness Center will be open with free admission all day and will provide equipment demos.

Humana Day at Certified Farmers’ Market
Humana Day will take place at the Certified Farmers’ Market in Old Town La Quinta. Vendors at the farmers’ market are regionally based within the Coachella Valley area and many produce organic and spray-free products.
This year’s market will play to all five senses, providing patrons with fresh food, music and culinary entertainment. Featured items will include fruits, vegetables, cut flowers, honey, eggs, nuts, herbs, bread, cheese, organic meats and others, all of which are provided by community-based growers and producers. Participants will also enjoy a special slow food demo featuring Chef Michael Vaughn of Twenty6 Restaurant and exciting “Chopped” style cooking contest featuring La Quinta High School Culinary Arts Students.
