Exciting New Events for Possible Inclusion at the Winter Olympics in Sochi 2014

On Wednesday, 6 April 2011, The Executive Board (EB) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will make a decision about the possible inclusion of the following events in the programme for the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi in 2014.

Events proposed by the International Ski Federation (ISF):
* Ski Halfpipe (Men and Women).
* Snowboard Slopestyle (Men and Women).
* Ski Slopestyle (Men and Women).
* Alpine team parallel competition (mixed).
* Women's Ski Jumping.

Event proposed by the International Biathlon Union (IBU):
* Biathlon Mixed Team Relay.

Event proposed by the International Skating Union (ISU):
* Figure Skating Team Event.

Event proposed by the International Luge Federation (FIL):
* Luge Team Relay.

The decision to include the new events will be based on a report presented by the Olympic Programme Commission (OPC) to the IOC Executive Board (EB) in Acapulco in October last year. The OPC studied the proposals of the individual International Sports Federations and consequently compiled a detailed analysis of all candidate events at their respective world championships this winter. The Commission also looked at an operational feasibility study conducted by the organisers of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games.

The key positive factors included whether the proposed changes would increase universality, gender equity and youth appeal, and in general add value to the Games in Sochi and beyond. Other considerations included the cost of infrastructure, and the impact on the overall quota and the number of events.

The announcement will be made at 1300 GMT on Wednesday, 6 April in London where the IOC is meeting at the same time as the Sport Accord Convention.
